POETRY AS PRESERVATION: A SERIES OF WORKSHOPS (DARCH)
Poetry as Preservation: Exploring East African Narratives
We have titled this series of workshops Poetry as Preservation as we aim to explore local heritage whilst focusing on language and the impact of borders have on how individuals choose to identify. We look forward to working with young Tanzanian writers who are interested in continuing this conversation and adding to the collective history of the region.
Our workshops are grounded in Swahili and Sudanese poetry alongside diasporic East African voices, highlighting the linguistic and stylistic diversity of the region’s poetics. The forms we will explore will range from ushairi poetry (derived fromthe Arabic shi’ir) to utenzi andcolloquial verse. From Shabaan bin Robert (often called the father of Swahili poetry) -to Taban Lo Liyong Mahjoub Sharif and Al-Saddiq Al-Raddi, we will use poets to celebrate East African poetics as both a set of traditions and a window into questions of national identity and belonging. Diasporic poets such as Safia Elhillo, Nick Makoha, Dalia El Hassan and Warsan Shire will interrogate how the diaspora, the dispersed, respond to these questions. Some of the poems we will be workshopping include:

Age 18-35 (The age limit applies to the participants of the workshops unfortunately, however, it is open to anyone interested in poetry. They do not have to submit or have professional writing experience)

Amaal Said is a Danish-born Somali photographer, and poet, based in London.

Launch of Exhibition on African Modernist Architecture

During the late 1950s and the early 1960s most countries of Sub-Saharan Africa gained their independence. Architecture became one of the principal means with which the young nations expressed their national identity. Parliament buildings, central banks, stadiums, conference centers, universities and independence memorials were constructed, often featuring heroic and daring designs. Modern and futuristic architecture mirrored the aspirations and forward looking spirit that was dominant at that time. A coinciding period of economic boom made elaborate construction methods possible while the tropical climate allowed for an architecture that blended the inside and outside, focused on form and the expression of materiality. The architecture of countries such as Ghana, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya or Zambia still represents some of the best examples of 1960s and 1970s architecture worldwide. Nevertheless it has received little attention and still remains to be ‘rediscovered’.
At the same time, this architecture also shows the difficulties, contradictions and dilemmas that the countries experienced in their independence process. The documentation of these buildings allows us to see architecture at a fascinating nexus of design and politics. Tanzania was no exception in this architectural journey of discovery and becoming. There will be a special installation on the Tanzanian chapter with our very own indigenous architects, in the likes of Anthony Almeida and Beda Amuli.
